Tajikistan is a country in Asia. Its capital city is Dushanbe, the official currency is the Somoni, and the main language is Tajik.
With a population of roughly 10.1 million people spread over 143,100 kmยฒ, Tajikistan is the 93rd most populous country in the world and the 94th largest by area. That works out at about 71 people per square kilometre.
Tajikistan shares land borders with Afghanistan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan and China โ 4 neighbours in all. Its largest urban centres are Dushanbe, Khujand and Bokhtar. The highest point in the country is Ismoil Somoni Peak, at 7,495 metres.
For scale, it covers almost exactly the same area as Nepal, while its population is closest to that of Portugal.
