Portugal is a country in Europe. Its capital city is Lisbon, the official currency is the Euro, and the main language is Portuguese.
With a population of roughly 10.2 million people spread over 92,212 km², Portugal is the 92nd most populous country in the world and the 109th largest by area. That works out at about 111 people per square kilometre.
Portugal shares land borders with Spain — its only land neighbour. Its largest urban centres are Lisbon, Porto and Braga. The highest point in the country is Mount Pico, at 2,351 metres.
For scale, it covers almost exactly the same area as Hungary, while its population is closest to that of Tajikistan.

Portugal: things worth knowing
- Portugal's mainland border with Spain is one of the oldest continuously settled borders in Europe, largely fixed since 1297.
- The country produces about half the world's cork, harvested from oak bark without felling the trees.
- Its highest point is not on the mainland but on Pico Island in the Azores, over 1,500 kilometres out in the Atlantic.
