The continents of the world

Seven continents, 195 countries. Each page lists every country in the region with its capital, plus the facts that come up most often in quizzes.

How many continents are there?

Seven, on the model used across this site and taught in most English-speaking countries: Africa, Asia, Europe, North America, South America, Oceania and Antarctica.

It is not the only model. Some countries teach six continents by combining Europe and Asia into Eurasia; others combine the Americas. The physical world does not change — only where the line is drawn. Quiz answers here follow the seven-continent model.

Only six continents have sovereign countries. Antarctica has research stations but no permanent population and no government of its own.
