Oman is a country in Asia. Its capital city is Muscat, the official currency is the Omani Rial, and the main language is Arabic.
With a population of roughly 4.6 million people spread over 309,500 kmยฒ, Oman is the 125th most populous country in the world and the 70th largest by area. That works out at about 15 people per square kilometre.
Oman shares land borders with United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia and Yemen โ 3 neighbours in all. Its largest urban centres are Muscat, Salalah and Sohar. The highest point in the country is Jebel Shams, at 3,009 metres.
For scale, it covers almost exactly the same area as Poland, while its population is closest to that of Panama.

Oman: things worth knowing
- Oman controls the southern side of the Strait of Hormuz, through which much of the world's seaborne oil passes.
- The Musandam Peninsula is an Omani exclave separated from the rest of the country by the United Arab Emirates.
- Its aflaj irrigation channels, some over 1,500 years old, still distribute water by gravity across the interior.
