Moldova shares land borders with Romania and Ukraine — 2 neighbours in all. Its largest urban centres are Chișinău, Bălți and Tiraspol. The highest point in the country is Bălănești Hill, at 430 metres.
For scale, it covers almost exactly the same area as Guinea-Bissau, while its population is closest to that of Mongolia.

Moldova: things worth knowing
- Moldova's Cricova and Mileștii Mici cellars hold some of the largest wine collections in the world, stored in tunnels tens of kilometres long.
- The country is landlocked apart from a few hundred metres of Danube frontage at Giurgiulești, which gives it a river port.
- Transnistria, a strip east of the Dniester, has operated outside government control since 1992.
