Ireland shares land borders with United Kingdom — its only land neighbour. Its largest urban centres are Dublin, Cork and Limerick. The highest point in the country is Carrauntoohil, at 1,038 metres.
For scale, it covers almost exactly the same area as Georgia, while its population is closest to that of Costa Rica.

Ireland: things worth knowing
- Ireland has no native snakes, a fact folklore credits to Saint Patrick but which glaciation explains better.
- The Great Famine of the 1840s cut the population by around a quarter through death and emigration, and it has still not returned to its pre-famine peak.
- Its only land border is with Northern Ireland, part of the United Kingdom.
