For scale, it covers almost exactly the same area as Georgia, while its population is closest to that of Costa Rica.

Ireland: things worth knowing

  • Ireland has no native snakes, a fact folklore credits to Saint Patrick but which glaciation explains better.
  • The Great Famine of the 1840s cut the population by around a quarter through death and emigration, and it has still not returned to its pre-famine peak.
  • Its only land border is with Northern Ireland, part of the United Kingdom.
