PlayAbout Top Spoken Languages
Each continent's list is ranked by native speakers, not by where a language is officially recognised or how many people speak it as a second language — that single rule is what makes six very different lists comparable to each other.
That convention produces some genuinely surprising results. Swahili is understood by well over a hundred million people across East Africa but ranks low here, because almost all of them learned it as a second language rather than a first.
Some continents give a full top ten; North America and Oceania stop at six, because beyond that point sources disagree even on which languages belong on the list, not just their order — a shorter, honest list beats a longer, made-up one.
