Haiti is a country in North America. Its capital city is Port-au-Prince, the official currency is the Gourde, and the main language is French.

With a population of roughly 11.7 million people spread over 27,750 kmยฒ, Haiti is the 81st most populous country in the world and the 143rd largest by area. That works out at about 422 people per square kilometre.

Haiti shares land borders with Dominican Republic โ€” its only land neighbour. Its largest urban centres are Port-au-Prince, Carrefour and Delmas. The highest point in the country is Pic la Selle, at 2,680 metres.

For scale, it covers almost exactly the same area as Burundi, while its population is closest to that of Belgium.
