Mauritania is a large, mostly Saharan country in North-West Africa with a small population spread over a vast desert interior. Mauritius is a small Indian Ocean island nation east of Madagascar, known for coral-reef tourism, and one of Africa's wealthiest countries per person despite having almost no natural resources to speak of.
Both names trace back to Roman-era geography — Mauritania from the ancient Berber Mauri people, Mauritius named later by Dutch sailors after Prince Maurice of Nassau — an etymological coincidence rather than any real connection.
