The Dominican Republic is far larger and far more populous, occupying the eastern two-thirds of the island of Hispaniola (Haiti holds the west) and drawing millions of tourists a year to its beach resorts. Dominica is a small, mountainous, rainforest-covered volcanic island further south in the Lesser Antilles, nicknamed the "Nature Island" for its unusually undeveloped, hiking-and-diving-focused tourism.
The language split makes them easy to tell apart once you know it: the Dominican Republic is Spanish-speaking, a legacy of Spanish colonisation, while Dominica is English-speaking, having passed between French and British control before ending up a British colony.
