Chile is one of the most oddly shaped countries on Earth — over 4,300 km long but rarely more than 200 km wide, squeezed between the Andes and the Pacific — while Argentina spreads out east of the mountains into wide plains, the pampas, that support one of the world's great agricultural and beef-exporting economies.
Both nations claim territory in Antarctica and parts of the far south, and both have a strong Andean mountaineering and skiing culture — several resorts sit almost directly on the shared border, with lifts on one side and trails that cross into the other country.
