Plan any savings goal with confidence

Whether you're building an emergency fund, saving a house deposit, or putting money aside for a wedding or trip, this calculator answers the two questions that matter: how long will it take? and how much do I need to save each month? Switch between the two modes depending on whether your deadline or your monthly budget is fixed.

How to use it

Enter your target amount and anything you've already saved. In timeline mode, add your planned monthly contribution to see your finish date. In monthly mode, set a deadline in months and we'll tell you exactly what to put aside. Add your savings account's interest rate to factor in compound growth.

Why a target date changes everything

Saving without a deadline is the easiest way to never finish. Attaching a date converts a vague intention into a concrete monthly number you can automate and forget. If that number feels too high, you have three levers: extend the timeline, trim the goal, or find extra income. Seeing the trade- offs side by side makes the decision obvious.

Frequently asked questions

How does the savings goal calculator work?

Choose a mode. In 'how long will it take' mode we add your monthly contribution to your balance each month, apply any interest, and count the months until you hit your target. In 'how much per month' mode we work backwards using the future-value-of-an-annuity formula to find the exact monthly amount.

Should I include interest or investment returns?

If your money sits in a high-yield savings account, enter its APY. For longer goals invested in the market, a conservative 4%–6% is a common assumption — but returns aren't guaranteed. Enter 0 to ignore growth entirely.

What's a realistic savings goal?

Start with a specific number and date: a $10,000 emergency fund in two years, or a $20,000 house deposit in three. Specific goals are far easier to stick to than 'save more'.

How can I reach my goal faster?

Automate the transfer on payday so you save before you spend, increase the contribution whenever your income rises, and keep the money somewhere that earns interest but stays accessible.

Is compound interest included?

Yes. Interest is compounded monthly on your running balance, which is why higher rates and longer timeframes make a noticeable difference to the result.
